Anyone know what this is?

Im in zone 8b—something had been eating away at my calendula (pictured), my spinach and now my tomato leaves! I woke up this morning to find what I think are droppings? Anyone know what they are and what preventative measures to take? Its my first year gardening and Im at a loss here :/ appreciate all the help!
